What is Scroll?

Scroll is an Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) aiming to offer a secure, low-cost, developer-friendly execution layer with maximum EVM equivalence. This will allow anyone, anywhere, to build decentralized apps on-chain and will enable a seamless migration to L2 for any Ethereum-based application.

How does Scroll work?

Scroll aims to be decentralized and permissionless, open to anyone with the vision of building scalable applications within Ethereum security guarantees. It is a validity rollup, which processes transactions off-chain, subsequently posting data to Ethereum L1 and verifying state by posting Zero Knowledge Proofs (Halo2) to L1, which are verified in a smart contract.

Scroll's technical architecture includes:

  • Scroll Node & Sequencer: Creates L2 blocks (orders transactions), and commits data to Ethereum L1, alongside a Halo2 proof.
  • Roller Network: Generates Halo2 validity (ZK) proofs of the EVM execution, making Scroll become what is commonly referred to, as a “zkEVM”.
  • Rollup and Bridge: L1 Contracts that handle proof verification on Ethereum and enables communication with L1 (e.g. for token transfers.)

Scroll plans to decentralize its sequencer and Roller roles in the future, bolstering security & liveness guarantees through improved network decentralization.

By leveraging the verifiable computation of its zkEVM, Scroll scales EVM-equivalent execution to thousands of TPS, while maintaining L1 security. Given the low friction to Ethereum L1, Scroll has already been gaining quite significant traction.

If you’re interested in building a multichain application that encompasses Scroll, or simply want to transfer tokens to or from Scroll, you can easily do so using Wormhole.

How to transfer assets to or from Scroll

If you have assets on any of Wormhole’s 30+ connected blockchains and want to bridge to or from Scroll, you can do so via Portal Bridge by following the below steps:

  • Head to Portal Bridge
  • Connect your Wallet
  • Select Scroll as either the Source or Target chain for your transaction
  • Complete the tarnsfer process
How to connect your app to Scroll

If you are a builder who wants to enable token transfers to and from Scroll, you can do so in just three lines of code via Wormhole Connect. Connect enables developers to bring wrapped and native token transfers directly into their application UIs and can seamlessly enable bridging to and from all of Wormhole’s 30+ connected blockchains, not just Scroll, and secured by the Wormhole Guardians.

To start integrating Connect and enabling your application on Scroll, check out the NPM package to get started.

About Wormhole

Wormhole is the leading interoperability platform that powers multichain applications and bridges at scale. Wormhole provides developers access to liquidity and users on over 30 of the leading blockchain networks, enabling use cases that span DeFi, NFTs, governance, and more.

The wider Wormhole network is trusted and used by teams like Circle and Uniswap. To date, the platform has facilitated the transfer of over 40 billion dollars through over 1 billion cross-chain messages.
