What is Scroll?
Scroll is an Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) aiming to offer a secure, low-cost, developer-friendly execution layer with maximum EVM equivalence. This will allow anyone, anywhere, to build decentralized apps on-chain and will enable a seamless migration to L2 for any Ethereum-based application.
How does Scroll work?
Scroll aims to be decentralized and permissionless, open to anyone with the vision of building scalable applications within Ethereum security guarantees. It is a validity rollup, which processes transactions off-chain, subsequently posting data to Ethereum L1 and verifying state by posting Zero Knowledge Proofs (Halo2) to L1, which are verified in a smart contract.
Scroll's technical architecture includes:
- Scroll Node & Sequencer: Creates L2 blocks (orders transactions), and commits data to Ethereum L1, alongside a Halo2 proof.
- Roller Network: Generates Halo2 validity (ZK) proofs of the EVM execution, making Scroll become what is commonly referred to, as a “zkEVM”.
- Rollup and Bridge: L1 Contracts that handle proof verification on Ethereum and enables communication with L1 (e.g. for token transfers.)
Scroll plans to decentralize its sequencer and Roller roles in the future, bolstering security & liveness guarantees through improved network decentralization.
By leveraging the verifiable computation of its zkEVM, Scroll scales EVM-equivalent execution to thousands of TPS, while maintaining L1 security. Given the low friction to Ethereum L1, Scroll has already been gaining quite significant traction.
