BIO protocol is using Wormhole’s NTT framework to make its eponymous token, BIO, natively multichain. Already live on Solana and soon on Base, the integration will make tokenized science opportunities available to two of the fastest growing crypto communities and drive the growth of decentralized science (DeSci).
BIO protocol is a launchpad for scientific communities that enables the funding, development, and tokenization of biotech projects. It builds on the success of Molecule’s tokenization technology and the VitaDAO community’s commitment to longevity research.
From a technical perspective, BIO operates as a curation and liquidity protocol that runs on the recently-launched BIO token. This enables patients, scientists, and biotech professionals to use it as a community-owned resource for early stage intellectual property development.
Wormhole’s Native Token Transfers (NTT) is an open and composable framework for seamlessly transferring native tokens across blockchains while preserving their intrinsic properties.
NTT is already powering natively multichain tokens for leading projects such as Lido, Sky, Jito, ether.fi, Stakewise, and Wormhole's W token, demonstrating its industry-wide impact and reliability. With BIO, another leading protocol joins the ranks of NTT adopters.
The NTT integration expands BIO beyond Ethereum, with the token now live on Solana and coming soon to Base. This multichain presence makes DeSci funding opportunities available to a wider crypto community, connecting scientists and funders across networks.
NTT also enables projects like BIO protocol to maintain full control over their tokens' behavior on each chain, including aspects such as customizability, metadata management, and ownership or upgradeability. This ensures compatibility with any token standard or governance system, offering unparalleled flexibility and adaptability.
For existing token deployments (such as BIO), NTT can operate in a "locking" mode, maintaining the original token supply on a single chain while enabling effortless cross-chain transfers. Alternatively, it can be deployed in "burn and mint” mode. This allows for a unified supply that is managed and maintained across all supported chains, completely eliminating the need for wrapped tokens.
NTT is already being used by some of crypto’s most systemically important assets, such as Lido's wstETH and Sky Protocol's USDS, to unify users and liquidity.
